He served in the Second World War and in 1948 joined the civil service. In the mid-1960s he completed his first novel, Watership Down, for which he struggled for several years to find a Richard Adams, Writer: Watership Down. Richard Adams spent his first 52 years in relative anonymity. And when he did complete a book that he wrote, he struggled to find anyone to publish it. Richard George Adams was born on 9 May 1920, in Newbury, Berkshire.
